Academic Decathlon[edit]

The SMS Academic Decathlon was started sometime in Summer or Fall 1993 by coach Vivian Cornwell. Cornwell took seven teams to the national level. When she retired in 2005, she was replaced by Stan Stern, who had taught at the middle school level for many years.

2005-2006 Season[edit]

During Stern's first year coaching, the team won the Regional competition with a 9 event score of 29,645, roughly 2,000 points better than rival SM Northwest. At the state competition, the team jumped to a 10-event score of 37,395, and widened their margin over Northwest to 5,500 points.
