Plano Senior is one of the most storied programs in Texas Academic Decathlon history. Plano Senior has often been in the top 10 since 1991. Unfortunately, Plano Senior never won a state championship despite always being close. Finally, they won their first state championship in 2006 and placed second at Nationals. They then repeated in 2007, but were not nearly as strong, finishing fifth at the national competition. In 2008, they placed third in the large competition behind Irving Nimitz and Pearland; in this competition, John Thompson became one of the highest scoring varsities in Texas history, scoring a 8,601. At the 2008 state competition, Sheila Kolb won the Coach of the Year.
