Team History

Marshall's Academic Decathlon team is among the most successful in the history of the program. The team has won the LAUSD Academic Decathlon title five times: 1985-1986, 1986-1987, 1994-1995, 2010, and 2014. Marshall is one of the few schools to have won the USAD National Championship every time they qualified for nationals; the team won California's state competition and Nationals in both 1987 and 1995.

Marshall has placed in the top 10 at the California state competition every year since 2003. 2003 was a breakthrough year for the Marshall team: along with William Howard Taft, they defeated former champion El Camino Real at the LAUSD regionals, breaking a seven-year winning streak. At this competition, Marshall scored 45,972.2 points, second only to Taft's 46,694.9 and just above El Camino Real's 45,867.5. At 2003 state, Marshall scored 47,065.6 points and placed fourth overall.

David Ross Florey

Marshall Academic Decathlon is also known for David Ross Florey, the top varsity and top scorer overall with 8,936 points at the 1987 national competition. Florey's score was phenomenal in 1987, especially because no Decathlete had broken 9,000 points yet (Academic Decathlon was 19 years old at the time) and very few, if any, had broken 8,900. Florey scored 364 points higher than the top Honors Decathlete at Nationals/1987.

Florey's record of 8,936 points remained the highest varsity score in Academic Decathlon for 25 years, before falling to Jimmy Wu of Granada Hills Charter High School at Nationals/2012.
